Get Back Into The Workforce

Posted on: 10 July 2020

If you have been out of the workforce for many years, due to your responsibility to raise your children, you may be concerned about finding a job that will pay fair wages or fit into your schedule. Utilizing the services that are offered at a career center will aid in landing a job that coincides with your lifestyle and requires the job experience or skill level that you possess.

You Are Not Alone

People visit career centers to aid them in finding better jobs, networking with business owners who are currently recruiting employees, and improving a cover letter or resume that will be handed to prospective employers. As long as a person is of legal age to work in the United States, they are able to take advantage of the services that are offered at a career center.

There will be a mix of clients at a center and some may be older or younger than you or in a similar situation such as yourself. During your first visit to a center, you will need to sign in and wait in a reception area until a career counselor is ready to meet with you. Let the counselor know about your job history, including the duties that you are were responsible for, the length of time that you worked at each place of business, and the reason that you are currently unemployed.

If you are totally unprepared to apply for jobs or are nervous about how you will be perceived during a formal interview with a potential employer, you will receive help with looking up job positions that are currently available and may receive some informal training that will better prepare you for the interview process.

A Short Term Job Is An Option

You may be mainly interested in full-time employment or are only available to work hours while your children are in school and your spouse is at work, but there is no guarantee that you will be matched with a full-time position right away. If you would like to bring in some type of income and the career center works with local temporary agencies, a short term job may be available that will allow you to get your foot in the door, earn some much-needed cash, and improve your confidence level.

Factory owners, large business managers, and manual labor facility bosses often employ people for short term projects. With a short term job, there is a possibility that you will be hired permanently in the future if the employer is satisfied with your work performance and has an opening within the business that will be suitable for you.
